With her very first series “Confine” (which means “Horizon” in Italian), Vittoria Gerardi offers us a visual and mental experience of the landscape. The young Italian photographer, indeed, presents to us her own perception of the American landscape and more particularly that of the Valley of Death, a desert, arid and hot place. The photographer uses parts of the negative, like fragments of landscapes, to construct symbolic borders between matter and time, between space and light, as if to better mark the landscape with a scar, that of an imaginary horizon. Using alternative silver processes, the artist emphasizes the violent and extreme elements of the landscape. The synergy between chemicals and the sensitivity of silver paper on the one hand, and the delicate balance between the luck factor and darkroom takeover on the other hand, give rise to unique and non-reproducible prints and special tones. .
