A lover of animals and always passionate about science, and especially in the medical world, Mary-Lore L. first studied veterinary medicine. But she lacked so much art during these university years, that she subsequently studied painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
She completed her Master's Degree in Painting with a research project entitled "The Body, a strange palimpsest of Art and Science". It is a study of the history of "anatomical art" and "the medical imaginary" and its fantasies, a research on the perception of the body and on the diversions of the anatomy and Medical imaging. The book is available for consultation at the Royal Library of Belgium and was presented at a conference, in particular at the Belgian Museum of Radiology.
This work led to a deep reflection on the attraction of the opening of the body and the anatomical manipulation through the taboos, the death and the eroticism in which Eros and Thanatos meet. He gave a considerable impulse to his plastic creations. Since then, Mary-Lore L. has borrowed various "tools" from science: medical imagery, exploiting its formal and material appeal, but also its polysemy. She tames the special support of X-rays to include them in her paintings and to join them to the color in oil. Confronting these "portraits of transparency" with painting is a real dialogue between Art and Science, a union between an ancestral manual practice and a technological look ...
At the center of Mary-Lore L.'s work is an inexhaustible reflection on the image of women and on the human condition. The artist invites us to a questioning of identity, through nostalgia and sensuality. This is a very personal, subtle work, where time seems suspended in a troubling fiction.
