Tito Casal

A Brazilian photographer and biologist. Tito Casal now lives in Berlin.

Even though he lives and works far away from his homeland, Casal hasn't forgotten his Brazilian roots. His inheritance is a great source of inspiration for him. He began his ethnographic research in 2006, these were focused on the traditional population of fishermen in the states of Bahia and Para. This study will be detailed in his art.

In his photos, Tito Casal addresses all kinds of topics without any apprehension. Religion, sexuality and supernatural aspects can coexist. He plays around with reality as he transforms this according to his own subjectivity. If his shots are deeply rooted in reality, he gives himself the chance to transform them into leisure ones. The same image is able to mix natural and fictional aspects in a smooth manner.

Tita Casal's world likes to transform his surroundings but also his travels and this inspires him. Having traveled around the world, he tries to use references and memories. His encounters throughout the world provide him with a cultural pool through a particularly broad spectrum.

As he's a biologist, his photos are filled with science, a familiar aspect for him. In his series Man and animal, combine to make one. One can see his anthropologist eye here. He portrays animal photos on naked bodies, he merges skin, feathers and furs. The back becomes a mouth and the stomach becomes an eye. One can dwell on the details as the artist gives the parrot's pupil the opportunity to be spread out on the bust. Animals are on the move and are wild, they make bodies roar and gives them a shot at reality.

Tito Casal has exhibited in galleries on each side of the Atlantic, he mainly participated in the Biennial of Castelos Gera Adda in Italy in 2015.
