Mwenze Kibwanga was born in Shaba, in July 1925.

In 1950, he was accepted in the studio of Pierre-Romain Desfossés where he studied for 4 years.

At the moment of the fusion between this indigenous Art Academy and the official Beaux-Arts school created by Laurent Moonens, Mwenze becomes a part of the pedagogical team.

Mwenze Kibwanga’s work is well known by the specialists of African art. His artworks are part of important collections, such as that of the Royal Museum in Tervuren or the Rockefeller Museum in New York.
