Presentation

Francisco Zúñiga was born in 1912 in Costa Rica. His father, Manuel Maria Zúñiga, was a sculptor. He was 23 when he came to live in Mexico, working as an assistant in several sculpture workshops; he discovered the world of pre-Hispanic art at the old museum of anthropology in Mexico City. He is already producing monumental pieces.

In 1938, Zúñiga joined the teaching team of "La Esmerelda", the prestigious Mexican painting and sculpture school of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City, where he remained until 1970. The artist worked with Guillermo Ruiz , the sculptor Oliverio Martinez, the painter Manuel Rodriguez Lozano. Zúñiga won numerous first sculpture prizes throughout his artistic career.

From 1972, the artist devoted much of his time to his graphic work, mainly lithography. Whatever his means of expression, the artist always seeks an expression of human values. The exuberant and sensual volumes, like the majestic proportions, lend each woman (her main theme) of Zúñiga a sense of sculptural and metaphysical perfection. The artist died in Mexico City in 1998.
