Christian Gaillard

France Born in: 1951
Christian Gaillard was born in Avignon in 1951. He lives and works in Paris and in the south of France.

Christian Gaillard’s breathtakingly realistic painting technique impresses by its economy and rigor as well as its nobility. Most of his work concentrates on details of bullfighters’ suits, often seen from behind. The deceptively materialistic style makes extremely sparse use of material. His treatment of gilding brings Velazquez to mind. Sumptuous bordering on hyper-realistic.

In truth, Christian Gaillard does not fear excess: in representations of statuary processions he does not hesitate to apply gold leaf to glorified haloes, or on his canvasses to glue real crystal tears on the Virgin Mary's cheeks. The figuration is master full.
