Presentation
André Dignimont was a French painter, illustrator, caricaturist, stage designer, engraver and lithographer born in Paris in 1891. He also played in several films, notably in Donne-moi tes pieds, where he performed his own role under the direction by Sacha Guitry.
André Dignimont devoted himself solely to works on paper, disdaining, with rare exceptions, painting on canvas.
He began his career as a designer and caricaturist in satirical newspapers such as Le rire, Le rire, etc.
He was quickly recognized for his sense of setting up, and for a style that was both elliptical and evocative. Member of the Salon d'Automne, he also exhibits at the Salon des Tuileries, as well as at the Salon de l'Araignée. He renewed the art of illustration, by the use of vaporous colors highlighted by a skilful use of white paper.
His evocation of the people of the milieu, and of prostitution which he treats without complacency but with poetry is particularly appreciated.
Well known in literary circles, he was chosen as an illustrator by Colette (Mitsou, L'Ingénue libertine) and by Galtier-Boissière (The good life).
