Biography
Born in 1957, Jean Philippe Lemée lives and works in Rennes. A subtle painter, his work reconciles the conceptual and humorous aspect. The artist intersperses his work with many references pertaining to art history (Lichtenstein, Courbet..), but also the current culture, board games...His procedures flirt around with a parody on Andy Warhol whereas his "aesthetic philosophy" resembles the one of Robert Fillou. The artist questions the role of an artist, by putting his own mystified image at risk. Lemée infringes the rule, he twists it around, goes beyond it and heads towards the real impact it makes on the spectator. His works require our own comprehension or rather our "collective and productive strength" says Gilles Froger (extracts from La star, le roi, l'artiste et nous, text appeared in « Parade » n°5, ERSEP, Tourcoing, 2006). "Through the spectator's eye, the work comes into being" claimed Marcel Duchamp...Jean Philippe Lemée updates this principle, wanders towards classic art: from the object to the spectator. He considers his work to be an essential medium for action, for revelation, and not just a motionless contemplation. The creator tries to wake up and play around with the spectator's body and mind, at the same time. "Here, the artist becomes the director, a contribution and experience coordinator, where what was once called the public is now invited to a festival where the painter himself participates and creates his works, around those people who are part of this moment" says Jean-Marc Huitorel about himself. His work has been exhibited in galleries since 2000.
