Biography

Klaus Rinke was born in Germany in 1939. He currently lives between Los Angeles and Austria after having spent long periods in France and Germany. He taught at the Düsseldorf Academy until 2005.

His work can be situated at the meeting point of Body Art, Land Art and conceptual art. His series of photographic self-portraits and alphabets in sign language, transform the body into an instrument for measuring space and time. Water – its flow and its energy – and clocks – a basic, simple shape – haunt his installations.

Klaus Rinke’s work was exhibited at the MoMA in New York in 1973, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1976, the Pompidou Center in 1985 and the CCC-Tours in 2003. His work is collected internationally.
