Nurhidayat was born in 1973, in Kuningan, West Java, Indonesia. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the Department of Visual Arts and Crafts Education, Indonesia University of Education (UPI), Bandung. He has a strong character in his Drawing works and has contributed his prominent influence on the trends of art and craft works at UPI Bandung.
In 1994-2005, Nurhidayat’s numerous works have been published as illustration rubrics in both local and international mass media, arts and crafts exhibitions, biennale, and national competitions in Indonesia. In addition to his activity as an artist, he is also active as a teacher and a manager of alternative arts spaces in Bandung. This allows him to belong as one of the prominent contemporary artists in Indonesia. In his exploration process, Nurhidayat takes inspiration from the process of collage in ‘capturing’ the images that he then transforms with his gift for drawing.
The combination of Nurhidayat’s developing techniques has drawn the interests of arts audience after he participates in some artist residency programs held by Indonesian, German, and French curators. Nurhidayat’s works skillfully project paradoxical phenomena within the almost nonstop imagery and sign filled daily contemporary social life. His works simultaneously question artists’ reaction and position on the midst of the said environment by ‘capturing’ parts of the visual imageries that ‘seduce’ the memories to trace the relationship of the piling and configured signs through paper, canvas, arts installation, and video media.
The same work pattern is maintained as his Final Research Project at UPI, which he registered to compete at various International Arts Exhibitions in South Korea and the United States of America. Since 2005, Nurhidayat has been active with his art works and pioneering his arts career in Roane, France. (Dida I.A & Abhirama S. D. Perdana.)
