Presentation
Alice Cattaneo was born in 1976 in Italy. She currently lives and works in Milan.
Her work is based on a juxtaposition of materials such as glass, concrete and steel. Alice Cattaneo emphasizes the richness of the relationships of these materials with each other and the creative process that, for her, is the most important aspect of the work. No previously acquired knowledge is necessary for the viewer to understand her work, since, according to her, the critical discourse emanates directly from the work, without necessarily referring to it explicitly. Such a discourse is felt in the sculpture and not around this sculpture, thanks to its materiality and its presence.
Through her practice based on installations and sculptures in situ, Alice Cattaneo is currently developing her practice by creating works that are no longer attached to a specific architectural context. On the other hand, for each of her sculptures, the spatial relation between each element is the result of a long reflection. In her more recent work, she introduces new techniques and materials such as blown glass and poured concrete, which involves artisans and specialists in her work. Often hung on the wall or presented on a shelf, her sculptures are composed of increasingly simplified shapes, so much so that they become almost simple lines and geometric shapes. The removal of these elements allows the artist to question the notions of horizontality and verticality, to apprehend them as the foundations of a sculptural practice.
