Hiroyuki Moriyama

Japan Born in: 1936

Hiroyuki Moriyama's love for France has lasted almost a lifetime.

The Japanese artist, born in 1936 in Kunamoto, on the Ky?sh? island, moved to Paris in 1963 to study at the ENSBA (École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts). He lived in France for more than 45 years, until his death in 2008, in Boulogne, where he had his studio.

It was obvious very early to him that painting was what he wanted to do in life. Hiroyuki Moriyama started studying with a disciple of the printmaker Tsuguharu Fujita, but he eventually gave up figurative work and embraced abstraction. During the '80s he became close with the Bauhaus school through Jean Leppien, a representative of the “réalité nouvelle" movement. Moriyama felt mostly close to contemporary western art but he embraced his Asian roots which are evident in his spiritual approach of painting.

Asked about his technique, the Japanese artist explains his attachment to the Buddhist philosophy. His works translate his constant search for balance between the forces of the world and constitutes his modest contribution to the rhythm of the universe. His color palette evolved and in the last years of his life he gave up painting in color and only used black and white, symbolizing yin and yang. Hiroyuki Moriyama's body of work is closely influenced by his meditation and by certain holy texts.

Moriyama also worked attentively on the texture of his paintings with geometric patterns. He adds splashes of color to break the impression of rigour and to create movement, a breath of life in his paintings. To him, these unexpected imperfections symbolyze the freedom of humans in contrast with the restraints imposed on them.

Hiroyuki Moriyama's work is appreciated all over the world and is part of public and private collections. He was awarded numerous distinctions, such as the Prize for 21st Century Art in Japan in 1996, the Kato Award in 2003 in Paris or the Yoshii Award in 2007.
