Born in Ammerzoden in the lowlands of Maas en Waal. As a child, he and his family had to leave there homes
in 1944 because of the war. In 1948, he did get an honourfull order, painting a portret from the new queen of the Netherlands Juliana. Martin did get a classical studie in painting at the academie in s'-Hertogenbosch.
He was not happy with that study and later, as he admired the Cobra group, he met the Belgian expressionist Permeke. Martin gets to know the Flemisch expressionists paintings, and he breaks with classical painting. Martin then became the unique expressionist as he will be remembered.
