Rom Isichei

Born in 1966 - Nigeria

Rom Isichei studied at the Yaba College of Arts, Lagos (graduated 1984) and at the Chelsea College of Arts, London (2013).

Rom Isichei spent several years working as a graphic artist in different advertising agencies before dedicating himself to the full-time practice as a painter. He is renowned for his mixed media paintings featuring fractured faces painted in bright color combinations with palette knives using heavy impasto. The faces express a wide range of emotions that are rendered ambiguous due to Isichei's habit of dividing each face into several overlapping panels.

Rom Isichei's training at the Yaba College of Technology provided a legacy of figurative art that he distilled into an eclectic combination of minimalist forms (many of his large-scale paintings feature individual faces) and highly expressionist color manipulation. The sophistication and direct energy of these paintings have made Isichei one of the most successful Nigerian artists of the past decade.
