Ada Muntean (b 1987) is a Romanian curator and visual artist. She practices drawing, painting, digital art, installation, constantly experimenting with a great variety of media.
Her intensely figurative images are structured from the composition / re-composition of elements which are often fragments of the human body or pertaining to an imagery exploring the romantic, dark, dramatic tensions and turmoil of the de-construction and re-construction of identities. She is a member of the STUP artistic community. Lives and works in Cluj.
Ada Muntean explores in her works an enigmatic, dark dimension of the contemporary identity, always placed under the pressures of permanent shifts and reshaping. Her intensely figurative images often reveal a direct, dramatic, self-referential charge. The image of the feminine body – a central element in her expression, undergoes a series of fragmentations and associations with elements of an unsettling, lyrical symbolism, a dark poetic romanticism which explores the darkness of the inner – or exterior – tensions threatening a vulnerable, tormented self.
Her works, regardless of the medium of choice, employ the same somber, monochrome palette, in which the rare and unexpected bursts of intense color underline the intensity of the heavy, laden, atmosphere – dark reveries or on the contrary, lucid, sometimes ironical critique, deriving from an analysis of her own re activeness to the aggressive and painful aspects of the contemporary society.
