Born in 1973 - Syrian Arab Republic
Hasko Hasko was born in 1973 in Alep in Syria. In 2000 he graduated from the Beaux-Arts Faculty of Damascus, with a specialization in oil painting.
The painter declared «Now with Syrian art increasingly gaining legitimacy on the international market, life is becoming easier and artists are gaining more respect. Before, we were considered as madmen. It is changing; now we are more and more respected as poets and producers».
The themes of his paintings are about nature, animals and mythical figures that are inspired from the Mesopotamian culture. They are mainly treated with acrylic painting or a mix of different techniques, using discreet colors.
In 2002, his work was showed in many individual and collective exhibitions in Syria and around the world, including in London, the United States, Iraq, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates and in Turkey. However, in 2013 Hasko fled the war towards Turkey and, the following year travelled on a lifeboat across the Mediterranean, to reach Europe. He then finally arrived in Denmark, where he since lives as a refugee.
«A Perilous Journey», the project that tells the story of three Syrian refugees travelling to Europe (Of which one is Hasko's) was financed by the Nobel Peace Centre in Oslo, and was published as a comic strip by The Guardian and Aftenposten on the 12th of November 2015.
