Mouneer Al Shaarani

Born in 1952 - Syrian Arab Republic


Mouneer El Shaarani is a calligrapher, designer and writer, he was born on 6th September 1952 in Syria. He was a student of the great Syrian calligrapher, namely Badawi Al Dirany and studied at the University of Fine Arts in Damascus, he graduated in 1977.

He is famous for his work in contemporary Arabic calligraphy, he became famous worldwide due to his major innovations in traditional Arabic calligraphy, he draws inspiration from ancient and modern elements which surround him. He has himself created several different writing fonts which were used on his book covers but also in his personal work. His perfect art combined with his pioneering status in the discipline, has brought him worldwide recognition in the world of calligraphy.

While working as an artist, he also works as a consultant with the International Arabic Encyclopedia and has published several tutorials and articles on Arabic calligraphy and Islamic art.
His work has been exhibited throughout the world, from the Middle East to Europe, not to mention USA, and has gradually made him famous.
