Sharon Drew has been based in East London for over 20 years and completed her MA Fine Art at Byam Shaw at Central Saint Martins School of Art in 2003, where she is now a Mentor to fine art degree students. Her work was selected for the 2014 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and in 2013 for a two-person show – Rhythm, Balance, Flow - at T5 Gallery, Terminal 5, Heathrow Airport.

Sharon’s paintings have shown alongside highly established artists such as Mali Morris RA, Jeff Dellow and Clyde Hopkins in the recent London exhibition Drawing to Making and also Colour & Otherness at Grace Teshima Gallery, Montmartre, Paris. Sharon has also exhibited in solo shows and her work is in private collections throughout the UK.

Sharon has been the subject of a photo shoot for Getty Images as well as Art Consultant and provider of paintings for Art Is… a British musical feature film, directed by Barry Bliss.

The film Art Is… stars Paul McGann, Gary Kemp and Emily Beecham. During 2013 it has been screened at Tate Modern, London, UK; Philadelphia Independent Film Festival, USA; London Independent Film Festival and ICA London, UK. Art Is… was selected for competition at the 2014 American online film awards and shown at LIFF Lucerne International Film Festival, Switzerland. The film is also due to be screened this year in Moscow and St Petersburg.

The West Cornish landscape around St Ives is renown for its extraordinary light and colour and is a major influence on Drew’s work. Her paintings follow a long tradition of British colour-abstraction inspired by the land, sea and sky of the location.

Themes of light, space, colour and pattern run throughout and evolve out of process. Translucent and opaque layers are overlaid - rapid, repetitive applications of paint provide rhythm and pace to the work.

Much of the process is ‘in-the-moment’. Painted layers applied with momentum create an engaging state of flux between accident and control.

Sharon, commenting on the influence of the location, states …

‘Dazzling sun, intense colour, torrential downpours, windswept cliffs, lingering mist, impenetrable fog, fleeting light, concealing and exposing tides, rhythmic waves, … the edge of the ocean is both enthralling and compelling.’
