Presentation

Christabel Birbeck is a British sculpturer. She has a Ceramics BA (Hons) First Class (2011) from the University Arts London, Camberwell.

The inspiration for this ceramic work comes from abstract expressionist painting. Christabel Birbeck is particularly devoted to the group of artists working in New York in the 1950s, namely Motherwell, De Kooning, and Diebenkorn. This work is her interpretation of large scale canvases; her way of expressing abstract painting in a three dimensional form. Christabel Birbeck uses slabs of clay, painted with coloured slips, collaged together into box shaped sculptures.

Christabel Birbeck presents her work supported on redesigned combinations of old furniture. The ceramic part and the wooden component are united together and have equal status, and are presented as one sculpture.
