Graham Fagen

Born in 1966 - United Kingdom

Graham Fagen is a Scottish artist born in 1966 in Glasgow. He obtained a BA (Bachelor or Art) at the Glasgow School of Art, and a MA (Master of Art) at the Kent Institute of Art & Design.

Graham Fagen develops a very diversified and opened conceptual artistic approach. He realizes sculptures as well as drawings, photographs, films, texts, neons, installations and performances.

His artworks are inspired by extremely diverse references but they all talk about the role of the society, history, and the great cultural moments in the life of the communities and individuals. He tackles themes like slavery, the influence of culture in music, nature, and the symbolic power of flowers, urban planning and regeneration.

One of the turning points of his practice was the use of theatrical techniques, as the artwork entitled Peek-A-Jobby shows (1998). Fagen is inspired by the Shakespearean technique consisting in having a key action of the play off stage (for example a murder), thus playing on the imagination of the public as in dramatic action. For his artwork entitled The Making of Us (2012), Graham Fagen has worked with a stage director to deconstruct the staging and film production processes.

His artworks were exhibited at the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art in 2012, at the Artpace of San Antonio in 2012, at the Palazzo Fontana in 2014, at La Friche de Marseille in 2014, at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery of Edinburgh in 2011, at the Micky Schubert Gallery in Berlin in 2007, or even at the Modern Art Gallery of Glasgow in 2007.
Graham Fagen represented Scotland at the Biennial of Venice in 2015. He also participated at the Biennial of Busan, North Korea, New-Zealand, and the Biennial of Venice in 2003. In 2000, he was invited by the Imperial War Museum of London to work as an official artist of the Kosovo war.
