Déracinement, ré-enracinement: Substance et construction du soi

Bordeaux From October 20, 2022 to January 8, 2023

Presentation
Galerie Revel is very pleased to present the first personal exhibition, in France, of the ceramic artist Bisila Noha. Entitled 'Uprooting, re-rooting: Substance and construction of the self" the exhibition is visible from October 20, 2022 to January 8, 2023 in the Bordeaux space of the gallery. The exhibition 'Uprooting, re-rooting: Substance and construction of the se' brings together the largest body of work by Bisila Noha produced to date and presented at the same time.

The collection includes old, more recent and other futuristic works. From his first series of works, Brumas, to from current projects that blur the lines between pottery and sculpture, to brand new pieces using other materials such as plaster and bronze. Bisila Noha's work at its core turns out to be conceptual. Summoning complex notions of time, artistic heritage, transmission, identity and growth. The artist challenges the ideas of separation by time and proposes belonging to a community of artists who came before her. Bisila Noha criticizes the notions of value and recognition of a work of art mainly from the south or produced by women artists from the south: what defines a work of art? Who has the right to call it that? Many artists have been qualified as such by Europeans, judging the work and the artist through a Eurocentric prism. In her own words: "Since 2017, I have looked into different traditions of pottery, led by women from the South. Their energy, wisdom and experience - which I represent with two sturdy legs - meet with my energy and my approach to creation. It is a way for me to pay homage to all these women - most often forgotten - who have shaped the history of pottery. Their stories and their work, due to the patriarchal, Western and dominant colonialist in history, have unfortunately been ignored or belittled. At the same time, these works represent this search for my own identity and voice as a creative woman in this matriarchal line of artists."

Bisila's work Noha is in perpetual motion. Yet infused with complex and resolutely contemporary subjects, his work appears to us to be simple, honest and even naive at times. Sometimes contemplative, sometimes dynamic but resolutely political, her sculptures teach us about the importance of understanding that we form a whole despite our differences. Because as an artist, ceramist, woman of African and European origin, the affirmation of her multiple identities is felt both in the essence of her work and in the aesthetics and constant research.
