This color etching was executed based on a painted work by Auguste Renoir. The engraver is Jacques Villon, who carried out this engraving activity under the control of Pierre Renoir (Auguste Renoir's son).
The son of Auguste Renoir certifies that the work conforms to his father's drawing and affixes his signature as a guarantee. Jacques Villon signs as the engraver and provides the justification (edition number/title, usually).
The scene depicts a woman in a theater box wearing an elegant black and white striped outfit that draws attention. Her pale complexion contrasts with the intensity of the surrounding colors. Behind her, a man stands in the background, looking through binoculars at the audience on the balcony.
The subtle interplay of light and shadow is typical of an Impressionist approach, which skillfully captures the appearance and the essence of the moment. The frame, sober and classic, enhances the engraving.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, known as Auguste Renoir, was a French artist and leader of the Impressionist movement, born in Limoges in 1841. Active in the second half of the 19th century and considered a leader in the development of Impressionism, Renoir’s work highlights female beauty and sensuality, as well as atmospheric Parisian scenes, and is distinctive in its careful use of light and saturated color.
Renoir met Sisley, Bazille and Monet whilst studying art in Paris, and exhibited at several Paris salons in the 1860s, and later at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. His career took him overseas, to Algeria, Italy, Spain and more, expanding his portfolio of delicate portraits and emotive landscapes.
After developing arthritis, Renoir retired to the South of France but continued to paint until his final years. Now considered one of France’s master painters, Renoir’s pieces are celebrated globally at prestigious locations including the Musée d’Orsay, Washington’s National Gallery and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
