This striking diptych captures a moment of intimate connection through an innovative composition. The artwork is split into two panels that seamlessly align to depict two faces in a close embrace, set against a rich, purple hue. The artist employs a monochromatic palette with delicate shading to emphasize the contours of the faces and the tension of the moment. The juxtaposition of the profiles creates a dynamic tension, evoking both intimacy and separation. The left panel focuses on one face in profile, its expression serene and contemplative, while the right panel presents the other face, inverted, adding an element of intrigue and balance. The minimal use of color highlights the emotional depth and complexity of human connection. This piece invites viewers to ponder the duality of intimacy and the unseen moments between individuals.
Aphisit Sidsunthia was born in 1994 in Bangkok, Thailand. He holds a master degree in Painting from the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University. His excellence in the medium has presented him with various awards including The 19th Panasonic Contemporary Painting Contest 2017 and The 18th Panasonic Contemporary Painting Contest 2016. In 2023, he was selected as one of the artists in residence at No Name Studio in Shanghai.
Sidsunthia's work explores the interplay between visual representation and perception; societal norm and change; handicraft and technology. Much of his work references photographs and random images, representing the visual cultures of different times. Drawing inspirations from those images, his practice includes manipulating those images both manually and digitally by folding, collaging, removing and distorting. Referencing photographs from different time periods allows the overlapping and intersection of different ideologies.
While his earlier work depicts combination of various events in forms of collages, his more recent work usually centers on a singular event. The dimensional complexity then shifts to the lines, colors and planes that are artistically manoeuvred to minimize or maximize certain perceptions. His work invites the audience to question the status quo through the overlaying of weirdly shaped planes, as if they were windows to different realities.
