Le voile effacé

Paris From 5 May to 31 July 2020

Presentation
Olivier Masmonteil's previous exhibition presented an almost cinematic approach to the landscape. A landscape where the horizon is elusive and where the foreground, borrowing from American abstraction, becomes a barrier. There is no possibility of escape in the vertical landscapes, because this time these horizons are fragmented. The distance is memory: it is a question of summoning memories of landscapes, using the codes of memory: faded images, barely sketched, very little depth like an Okusai print (Olivier Masmonteil often refers to it). It is both a flat image memory, but also a painting memory. These vertical landscapes would also be affordable in two stages. An almost erased sepia background, a line image like a premise on the board and in a few places the "touches" of a foreground which makes this memory current. the gesture is there quite primitive, they are only traces or almost parietal imprints. The color intervenes like a drive and makes this foreground evidently present. As if it were a question of confronting an image without time with a moment of gesture which would update this memory, like a flash. Here again Olivier Masmonteil plays with reconciliations: a reference to imaginary oriental iconography as a plenitude, associated with those instinctual gestures that we find in abstract expressionists. It is about taking in hand these memories which are erased, to reveal this memory. Here again it is a real subject of painting: the gap between an intention of representation and the primitive gesture of this action of painting. In these vertical landscapes there is still a singular series: that of trees. These small formats are treated as portraits in which a figure is integrated into these landscapes: that of a damaged and isolated tree, central character of these twilight and dark horizons. They are white pines, New Zealand's living heritage, gigantic and thousand-year-old trees. The landscapes that have distorted them give a dramatic and romantic allure to their gnarled shafts. The series of these small identical formats contrasts with the previous one. They give the impression of a series of portraits of old people, tragic and imposing. Thomas Bernard
