When The Curtain Rises

Bay Harbor Islands From 31 July to 14 August 2019

Presentation
The art design project is proud to present WHEN THE CURTAIN RISES,
A retrospective exhibition featuring the photographic works of Juan Sebastian Fernandez.
The exhibition features a collection of exceptional black-and-white and color photographs.

The exhibition encompasses an important body of work which reflects on four fundamental axes: self-portrait as search for identity; time; the body as the space for intimacy, and motifs from fashion as symbolic of theater, death, and simulation. In each series, these focuses intertwine, and Sebastian explores not only formal qualities but as well his own humanity and uses photography as a means of communicating with his viewers “Sebastian’s theatrical and metaphorical approach extends to the imaginative use of motifs of the veiled and unveiled. In this lushly haunting series of photographs and a new video installation, the artist plays with various themes such as heritage, sexuality, and the unmasking of taboos and in turn, the revelatory power of transformation and self-definition,” notes the art curator Rosa JH Berland.

In this showcase, the spectator will experience Sebastian’s ability to capture the unusual reality that is engendered by instinct and driven by emotion, with such beauty and grace.

Reminding us of our human connection which goes beyond our skin or geographical location. His images, taken at San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia (declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005 by UNESCO), Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia, Santa Lucia, Colombia, the Native American village of Taos, New Mexico and his studio in Miami, are mostly inspired by the genre of the magical realism found in Gabriel García Marquez and Isabel Allende’s literary masterpieces, where reality and fiction, sleeping and waking, and myth and routine coexist. Within this realm, there is a space where the unbelievable becomes believable.
