biography under completion
Orosz István was born the 24 of october 1951 in Kecskemét. In 1975 he graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts. After having finished his studies, he dealt with stage settings, later with animation movies at the Pannónia Filmstudió.
Already in 1977 he was awarded for the best movie at the Festival for Animation Film in Zagreb (Silence). He participated regularly at international art exhibitions, graphical biannuals and film festivals. In 1981 he got the award of the Krakow short film festival; 1986 the first prize of the V. international graphic biannual. In the same year, he got the Derkovits-scholarship and other awards followed. He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, the Széchényi Literature and Art Academy and the Hungarian Academy of Arts. Since 1986 he is director at the Pannónia Filmstudió and guest lecturer at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts.
In the 80s he creates the Anamorphoses, which, with a special technique of mirroring, show interlaced images, such as Jules Verne’s portrait above a rocky seashore of the head of the Minotaurus in a maze.
In the 90s the miraculous staircase-series is born, which shows body parts on staircases. According to the angle of view, the figures seem to climb or descend the steps. In the same year, he creates the famous architectural graphics, such as the library window which opens at the same time to the inside and outside. István Orosz shows in his works a singular perspective on time and space. In addition to his graphics he designs posters for theatre, movies and books.
In 2002 he habilitates from the University of Applied Arts. Since 2004 he has been teaching at the Hungarian Institution for Art.
