Alex Kremer (1966) is a native of Dushanbe in the former Soviet Union, today’s Tajikistan. Kremer studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem during the late 1990s, and upon the 2000’s moved from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. Kremer paints large-scale oil paintings that are abundant with material.
His paintings are loaded with masses of color that create expressive textures which leave an impression that can not be ignored on the beholder. Kremer, in fact, is the kind of artist whose work makes a person contemplate with his or her mind’s eye – what the artist’s studio would be like. The material is present in all its glory and receives full credit for the weight it carries within the artpiece, on the surface of the format. Not only does Kremer paint using rich layers of matter that create dense clumps of color, but he also scratches and engraves them afterwards.
On an interview with “Ha’aretz”, Kremer said that the inspiration for his paintings is rooted in reality but goes far beyond it. He might see a wooden log outside the studio window and begin to paint it as it is, but it would only the first foothold. The tree would later become a few trees and likely to unfold its path into a thick forest. Therefore, he argues that if he had lived elsewhere it would not have affected his painting beyond recognition – since the lion’s share of it comes from his own mind; Reality functions as a springboard towards one’s imagination.
