Biography
Héctor Mediavilla is a Spanish photographer born in Barcelona in 1970. Holder of a masters degree in Sciences of enterprises and a MBA from ESADE (Ecole Superior d'Etudes d'Administration et Direction d'Entrepises de Barcelona), he then worked several years in the marketing department of a Japanese company, before being the project manager of an innovative concept, sustainable neighborhoods in catalog. In 1999, he retook again his studies with a Master in Cultural Management at the Idec-Pompeu Fabra University. In 2001, he did a first photographic reportage which already showed an artistic uniqueness and a strong interest for atypical social groups. Armed with a strong desire to denounce, Hector Mediavilla aspires above all to understand the human being and its relationship with its surrounding. in 2003, he started a project on the Congolian Sape, during his first trip to Brazzaville, where his role was to train professional photographers in Congo for the program "Support for visual arts in Congo-Brazzaville" financed by the European Union. He was the first foreign photographer to scrutinize life in Africa, far from the images of war, famine and safaris. His documentary works cover diverse subjects, such as the social impact of Mexican family migration, the controversy of the coca leaf in Bolivia, the Mesoamerican spiritual practices and the transformation of colonial architecture in Mozambique. Héctor Mediavilla received numerous awards, including he prize of the competition of the Picture of the Year, the Hansel Mieth Award, Fotopres, PhotoEspana, CoNCA or the Center's Project Competition. His work has been exhibited at the Dapper Museum (Paris), at the Markten Museum (Brussels), at the Weltkulturen Museum (Frankfurt), among others. His photographs have been published in the international press, in a recurrent way in Colors, Geo, The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Bussiness Week, XXI, Esquire, Internazionale and Photo. He has also work with institution such as Casa Africa, Casa America Catalunya, The French Institute of Kinshasa, and organizations such as Intermon-Oxfam and Médecins du Monde. In 2007, Héctor Mediavilla is the initiator of other independent Spanish photographers, the group of documentary photography, Pandora. He has also been a member of the Picturetank Cooperative Agency since 2003.
