  • About the artwork

In the work of Sugawa Makiko, girls are represented as half-dolls - half-human creatures. In Japanese, the term "doll" is pronounced "ningyo"; however, it can also be understood as "mermaid" and "evil creature" ...

The artist moves whith crutches, and created her own lingerie line, choosing for shows young one-legged models moving with prostheses.

Thisse embroidered and mutilated doll seem to be an echo of the sufferings faced by Makiko.
She also represent the condition of the Japanese woman, related to death in the Shinto tradition, who sees beauty in agony and sacrifice. Like a flower that is beautiful only when it is threatened with extinction, the woman is moving only when she is bruised.

    Signed and stamped.

Makiko Sugawa

Born in: 1974

Translation in progress

Makiko Sugawa was born in 1974 in Wakayama Prefecture.
She graduated from Kyoto University of Art and Design. After graduation, Sugawa worked as a designer and started drawing illustrations.

Sugawa is quite unique in her use of her excessively fine and delicate brushstrokes. The lines she traces give an impression of highly elegant embroidered lace. The expressions of female figures built from these lines are all very sensual and bring a very feminine eroticism.

She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions abroad (personal exhibition at Mondo Bizzarro Gallery Rome), Poland, USA and Paris.
