Lia Van Leeuwen

Netherlands Born in: 1954

Lia Van Leeuwen is a Dutch artist. She is a graduate of the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam, a city that she loves and where she still lives today, despite her international success. The painter works in her studio at at home and considers this balance essential to her creative process because it allows her to see her works at any moment, day or night. Lia Van Leeuwen shares Karel Appel's vision that a look at a painting is enough to change everything.

At the beginning of her career, Lia Van Leeuwen focused on purely graphic creations, mostly colour prints. It was later that she discovered oil painting and her work now mainly consists of colorful, large-format abstract paintings. Comparable to Jackson Pollock's "dripping" technique but more optimistic, the painter conveys positive energy and invites us to travel thanks to the perpetual movement she evokes. This is the case, for example, in her series "Into the Flow" or "Round and Round".

Her paintings contain antitheses that she coordinates perfectly: order and chaos, rhythm and counter rhythm at the same time...

Lia Van Leeuwen attaches great importance to the sense of freedom in her work. Each modern painting she produces reflects a moment, her mood and her desires in that moment. Some artworks are thus imbued with poetry and are an image of calm, peace and openness, while others appear more tormented with effects obtained through thicker materials. Following this idea of her search of transparency for the sake of the viewer, the artist produces for example series suck as "It's a Perfect Day" or "Endless".

Discover Lia Van Leeuwen's creations and explore her universe in this unique selection. And if you like abstract expressionist painting, you can also discover the work of other emerging talents such as Karen Vourron, Caroline Vis or Jean Jandeart...
