  • About the artwork

This beautiful woodcut "Peacock" is the small version of Gernot Kissel's big peacock. He loved all animals, but the peacock was his favourite, because of his colourful beauty.

In his earlier years, he and his wife Sonja had a horse farm close to the German Weinstrasse, which he had built himself as an architect. The iron gate to this place showed a big peacock according to his design.
This woodcut was a small edition of 75 and sold out since longtime. I got this copy from a collector.

Gernot Kissel

Born in: 1939

Germany

Gernot Kissel is a German painter born in 1939 in Worms, on the Rhine in Germany and died in 2008. Professional engineer and architect, he learned painting autodidactically at the age of 18.

His still life and landscapes are typical expressionist pieces, made with bright colors and frank lines. Kissel is best known, however, for his female nudes and portraits which are painted with an assurance which is almost disconcerting. His female figures have a direct and powerful sensuality and force the observer to admire them. We can perceive his admiration for women through them.

Kissel's work compares to that of famous German expressionists who were very much in fashion specially during the twentieth century, particularly Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel and in portrait painting, Alexey Von Jawlensky. Another comparison can be made with the elegant paintings of Kees Van Dongen or the deep sense of color used by British artist Sir Matthew Smith.

Gernot Kissel's paintings have been successfully exhibited in Germany as well as in London, Richmond and Newcastle in England. In June 2008, he exhibited his work in New York. His pieces are currently visible in several museums annd in private collections everywhere around Europe.
