Simon Hantäi is a Hungarian artist born in 1922 in Bia, Hungary. Hantaï attended the School of Fine Arts in Budapest and moved to Paris in 1949 where he participated in the surrealist movement and met André Breton. He then experiments with different techniques such as collage, rubbing or folding and his painting evokes strange, intertwined and undulating shapes, characteristic of this period.

In 1955, he broke with Breton, discovered Pollock and the American expressionist painters and approached European lyrical abstraction. His painting then evolves towards a more abstract and lyrical style, developing under the influence of Pollock a more gestural writing. In 1956, he presented at the Galerie Kléber in Paris the exhibition Sex-Prime, Hommage à Jean-Pierre Brisset, whose painting of the same title, testifies to a particular technique whose principle is to remove the painting in places, thus making appear colored backgrounds that seem to illuminate the painting from the inside.

From 1960, he gradually adopted a new technique: “folding". The principle is illustrated by the series of “Mariales", a huge canvas exhibited at the Galerie Kléber in 1962. This technique consists in freely folding the canvases in a more or less fine way, which thus crumpled are then painted blind, the brush only reaching the convex parts of the folds, the work in its entirety is therefore visible only when unfolded.
