Annina Roescheisen has had an unconventional career path in the art world. A multifaceted character, she has worked as a model, a medieval art specialist, an artists’ agent, was the patron of the Ninoo association for autistic children and today she is a multimedia artist. Artsper has asked her a few questions.

{Artsper}: After working as a model, a specialist in medieval art for Sotheby's and an artists’ agent, you are today a multimedia artist. Tell us a few things about your atypical career.

Annina Roescheisen: My modeling career was very short and very atypical because I stopped when I was 13. I have worked again as a model when I was 25 and was the image of brands such as Diesel or Bash who wanted to associate their name to an unconventional character. At that time I had just stopped working for Sotheby's and moved to France. At first I worked as an agent for young artists and then I started working as an artist myself. I wanted to find my own place in the art world and I found it as an artist. My universe was enriched by my experiences, my love for the Middle Ages that my life experience. All this is reflected today in my art.

{A}: You say you are a "social media artist". What do you mean by this?

AR: I would rather call myself a multimedia artist, because I work in different media. Everything I do is based on writing. Words are of great importance to me and I have always loved writing. Writing is the basis of my art. This is reflected visually in my sculptures that are all engraved, and I have numerous tattoos myself. In a way, through my tattoos, I am engraved for life on this earth. My heart beats the strongest for video art. It is a very complex subject that begins with writing. My words are transformed into a sort of living painting; a history is born in front of my eyes and I try to capture it by filming it. There is a lot of work to be done behind: the editing, the rhythm, the music and the integration of the whole in a universe, as installations or sculptures/objects - up to the final piece of video art. Therefore I would say that the word "multimedia" best describes my work.

{A}: What are your main sources of inspiration?

AR: That is a whole. Obviously the art, but also of human subjects in all their simplicity, music, literature, but also as much nature, earth. It is really a whole.

{A}: In your work, Pietà, which can be placed between sculpture and performance, you re-interpret the figure of the Virgin Mary in a pop register. Could you explain your approach?

AR: The Pietà is obviously a register of the Middle Ages, full of codes and strong symbols. I have always loved the Pietàs, their depth, their intimate character and at the same time their opening toward the world.

In my creation of the Pietà - it is a video composed of 5 videos and 8 photographs which accompany the work - the subject of the Pietà is explored on several levels and a reading on several plans is possible. It is a relationship between mother and child, a history of childhood, a history of abuse, a history between life, death and rebirth. The bear degrades, we clings to its childhood, nevertheless it becomes an adult, a woman, we open ourselves and search inside of us this key to inner wisdom that we often lose after childhood. It is in a medieval subject and historically we are going toward the Renaissance. The decor, the eyes, this kind of spectator behind, everything is slowing down and will be reborn afterwards. It is a performance in 5 acts, played intentionally very slowly with barely visible movements. Each video tells a story and the 5 of them form a complete cinematic narrative. This is the theme of the Pietà transcribed in a contemporary context with a lot of visible, but also hidden symbols. It waits to be decoded, as a treasure hunt for your own inner key which you will make you reborn every moment of your life in joy, hope, searching for the positive and the beauty in everybody’s life.

{A}: What is the artistic event that drew your attention this autumn?

AR: Personally, the most significant event was the completion of my last video, "What are you Fishing for?". This represents a year’s work, with many experiences, many things I learned and great joy for seeing this film born, step by step. I am very grateful for the effort that my whole team has made to give to achieve this.

Otherwise, the week of the FIAC is always intense. One discovers art as never before, it is everywhere in the city and behind each door you can discover incredible works. I was really impressed by the work of architect Sou Fujimoto in the Jardin des Tuileries. The work should remain there after the FIAC. It is perfectly integrated between the ancient art of the Louvre and contemporary art. It is a wonderful suite that tells the history of art in all its complexity and beauty.

{A}: What do you think of the Artsper project to sell art online? Have you already purchased a work online?

AR: I have not yet bought a work online - but I am very aware that this is the future. We all travel so much on this earth that communication via the internet is essential, and buying works of art online has become a necessity. So I would also like to know more about this and discover this way of approaching art. One sees and communicates today through a single image, if we take instagram for example - so i think that Artsper is ahead of its time. The works that it showcases on the site are very diverse and eclectic, and this is great!

{A}: What are your upcoming projects?

AR: Right now I write about my new film and I'll go on a prospecting trip to find the place that I have imagined as a painting before my eyes. I already have a fairly accurate idea of the place. I’m really anxious to discover it in reality.
