Meet Tali Roth, the visionary behind Tali Roth Interior Design, as she takes us on a journey through her dynamic career in interior design. Operating her practice in both Australia and New York, Tali's design style is intricately shaped by the unique characteristics of each location. In this interview, Tali shares her approach to client interactions, her affinity for certain art movements, and her dream design projects, offering valuable insights to aspiring interior designers.

1. Hi Tali! Thank you for speaking with us today. Could you start by introducing yourself to our readers? How did your career as an interior designer begin?

I started my career after a stint in the fashion industry - owning my own clothing label. I loved creating products and designing as well as the creative side of the business. I really hated being at the whim of the fast fashion world and the individual unknown end consumer. I decided that I still wanted to design but for an individual and I had always been inspired by interiors so studying interior design made sense. Once I finished the course I moved to New York where I started my own practice.

2. You've operated your business in both Australia and New York. How does your home base affect your design style and process?

I am affected by the kinds of spaces I am working in. In New York I worked with so many apartments and so I was restricted AND inspired by those spaces and the constraints of those spaces and how little interaction the interior had with nature. In Australia I work on homes which are much larger and more contemporary and have a strong connection to nature. Stylistically both places are different - with New York being way more traditional and Australia being generally more contemporary.

3. What questions do you typically ask your clients when getting started on a new project?

I like to ask my clients about their travels, their favorite hotels and their color preferences. I try to decipher what they want to feel in their space. I use this information together with their budget, family structure and timeline and build from there.

4. Are you inspired by any past art or design movements in particular? If so, why and in what ways?

I am super inspired by modernism. I love the shapes of mid century modern design - the drama of it as well as the long linear lines against the rugged brutalist accents.

5. What kind of artwork do you gravitate towards personally? Are there any artists that you have your eye on currently?

I have a strong sense of style when it comes to art. I gravitate towards really moody pieces. Strong pieces and sculptural pieces. I love modernist art.

6. Who would be a dream client to work with, from the past or present?

I have more of a dream job than a dream client. My dream job is a boutique hotel. I would love to do that anywhere in the world!

7. What advice would you give to aspiring interior designers?

Listen to the client. Be strong in your vision and your expertise but make sure to never lose sight of the essence of the client and what makes them unique. Try to finish jobs from start to finish and sometimes that means swallowing certain tougher personalities in order to see the job come to fruition so you can photograph it for your folio. Building your folio is the key to building your career.
