Nouvelle objectivité
La Nouvelle objectivité (Neue Sachlichkeit en allemand) est un mouvement artistique allemand né dans les années 1920 en réaction à l'art expressionniste. L'historien de l'art allemand Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub, qui était également directeur de la Kunsthalle de Mannheim, a été le premier à inventer ce terme lorsqu'il l'a utilisé comme titre pour une exposition en 1925. Cette exposition présentait des œuvres d'art qui rejetaient le style expressionniste en vogue à l'époque. En particulier, les artistes exposés étaient en désaccord avec l'égocentrisme et le romantisme des artistes expressionnistes, qui cherchaient à exprimer des émotions humaines et des idées abstraites dans leurs œuvres. Ils entraient également en contradiction volontaire avec le style idéalisé et utopique de l'expressionnisme, désillusionnés par les horreurs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Les artistes de la Nouvelle objectivité pensaient, au contraire, que l'art devait refléter le monde contemporain d'une manière objective et non sentimentale.
Parmi les principales figures du mouvement de la Nouvelle objectivité figurent Otto Dix, George Grosz et Max Beckmann. De nombreux artistes de ce mouvement sont connus pour leurs portraits, qui représentent souvent des personnes de manière naturaliste, voire satirique.
