

Biography
Per Kirkeby was a Danish painter, sculptor and filmmaker. Born in 1938, he studied at the Experimental Art School in Copenhagen before obtaining his MA in arctic geology at the University of Copenhagen in 1964.
Kirkeby's works have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale on multiple occasions, most recently in 2005. He also collaborated with the New York Ballet designing sets and costumes for Swan Lake and Romeo and Juliet.
Kirkeby's multimedia œuvre can be found in the permanent collections of many established institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate. He became a member of the Danish Academy in 1981. Considered one of the most influential Danish artists, Kirkeby died in 2018.
