Li Wei

When Chinese contemporary art makes us lose control, it is due to Li Wei. Born in 1970 in China, in the Hu Bei province, he grew up and still lives in Beijing.

A committed artist, Li Wei goes out of his way to realize confusing and vertiginous shots. A mix of performance and photography, his art challenges the laws of gravity. One sees the artist in preposterous positions, an unusual holler to our imagination. A loud cry, a cry for freedom. He also makes videos and installations.

Against the narrow-mindedness of the government, Li Wei responds through levitation. The individuals are isolated in the cities while the artist takes off. In a metaphorical manner, he begins a flight towards progress and emancipation through his pictures. By suspending his body, he captures looks and spreads awareness around him.

This casual dream becomes possible by a whole set of mirrors, assembly of metal cables and acrobatics. Waterfalls are accompanied by facial expressions and gestures of the face therefore highlighting the fall through humor.

Humor is one of the best vectors to broadcast a political criticism in a concealed manner and touch many people at the same time. Unusual and funny situations are the hallmark of Li Wei. The humorous aspect is even more visible through his visuals and the artist dangerously plays around with this, but in a farcical manner.

He puts his body at the service of his creative expression, treats it like an artistic medium, as many Chinese artists in the recent years. But he stands out by not calling upon traditional Chinese imagery, but disturbing and challenging the usual perception.

Today, Li Wei is one of the most influential artists of his generation. His work between acrobatics and pranks are conceals to denounce the injustices against environment and globalization. He wishes to come back to fundamentals, conveying strong messages about strong family values and love.
