Mac Whitney

Mac Whitney, born 1936 in Kansas, lives and works in Texas for the past 50 years. In 1979, Mac Whitney was awarded a commission by the City of Houston to build a large-scale sculpture funded by grants by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Department of Urban Development and is placed in the Stude Park, Houston. 

His work has been shown continuously over the last 50 years, both nationally and internationally, and is part of many public collections including the Dallas Museum of Art, The Fort Worth Museum of Art, The Art Museum of South Texas, The University of North Texas Museum, The Nave Museum, Victoria, Texas. 

Whitney’s dynamic sculptures and extensive career have become a recognized part of Texas’ rich cultural environment. Whitney’s abstracted raw steel sculptures portray the primary forces of tension and resolution while instilling a sense of monumentality. The freestanding sculptures are both prodigious and lyrical - heavy metal seems effortlessly bent, unfolding toward the sky. 

Mac Whitney has produced countless series of work: the Underslung, the T- Angle, the Kinetic, and the Linked-Series have been exhibited all across Texas. His work is incredibly important to the Texas’ contemporary art scene and thrives in a public setting.
