Artwork location: New Zealand

New Zealand hyperrealist artist Graeme Smallfield is a painter who explores the everyday world through still-life paintings. Using as his primary subject the classic themes of 19th-century realist painting (traditional sweets, flowers, vegetables and kitchen utensils), along with his obsession with detail, he skillfully transposes his poetics to the contemporary, offering us a reflection on the beauty of the ordinary in this enamel series presented to ARTSPER. In this series, kitchen classics were rediscovered at garage sales and second-hand stores, bringing back treasured memories of camping at the family's beach house.

Presentation

Art has always been at the heart of what Graeme does - as a retoucher, digital special effects artist, photographer, and painter. He started out using dyes and brushes, retouching on colour transparency film until the world of digital photography took hold. Graeme has now gone full circle, returning to his brushes with oil as the medium - using Atelier techniques initially developed by the Old Masters.

He has enjoyed international success and recognition as a retoucher and special effects artist. His work has featured in many global awards winning advertising campaigns, a published NZ stamp, a children's book and the iconic Anne Geddes' baby images. He has also won several awards as a photographer and really enjoyed the greater creative freedom given him. But as an artist, that wasn't really enough.

Finally, using oils, he now believes he has found a new creative medium and direction. It has taken several years and lots of experimentation to find his style and niche...but now he is proud to have his art hanging on walls from as far afield as Martha's Vineyard, USA and throughout New Zealand.
