Julien Jubault

French painter living in Barcelona, I have always been fascinated by abstraction. It was natural for me to turn to abstract expressionism as a form of expression, both because of the infinite possibilities offered but also because abstraction gave me my greatest artistic emotions. It was first through history, my first passion, that I became interested in the 1940s and 1950s. Then in the art, decoration and literature of this period which nourished my visual culture and deeply influenced my artistic choices.

Painting is about fixing time, to represent a moment, an idea, a landscape. This activity has gradually become a vital necessity. My creative process starts from an initial project, both intellectual and visual, modified through the application of different layers. Corrections and improvements gradually transform the final rendering to achieve a form of optical balance. Organic forms, memories and sensations are, in my work, simplified, transformed, mistreated, in a process of visual materialization. My works include a reflection on perspective and depth, through the use of simple structuring forms. These are then attenuated using superposition and contrast. I work mainly using acrylic, on canvas, with additions of oil paint, walnut stain, and mineral elements for texture and relief.

Deeply attached to Spain and the landscapes of Galicia in particular, I nevertheless remain marked by my origins. It was in the countryside of western France that I first felt all the beauty of nature and the plant world. There is therefore in my production this fascination for nature and its contemplation, maintained by a sensitive observation of our living spaces. Abstraction makes possible the transformation of the visible, and allows us to nourish the gaze with new images and impressions. It is therefore this freedom that I have chosen as a vector of artistic expression.
