Presentation
In February 2017, we offer a face to face meeting between a well-known artist from the gallery, Miguel Macaya, and a new emerging artist Ivan Franco Fraga. Both have chosen a sober figuration, and are attached to making oil paintings or pencil drawings, each with their own mode of expression. Miguel Macaya paints mainly oils on wood, with glazes that bring forth the light of twilight, the brilliance of opacity, the modulated whiteness and intensity of black. He appropriates the classic subjects of still lifes, animals, and imaginary characters by making them totally contemporary, timeless. Ivan Franco expresses himself in two distinct ways: the polaroid series, an infinitely delicate work of oil painting on tiny canvas (10x10cm) with the precious side of illumination; the pencil drawings, on a paper of 1 square meter with a precision which could evoke a photograph from afar and which reveals an impressive subtlety up close. The main subject is the woman evoked in the curve of a neck, the fall of a back. Miguel Macaya's works draw their source from the "Tenebrism of Ribera and Zurbaran, the best of Goya and other more modern painters such as Cézanne or Francis Bacon, or even perhaps certain painters with tormented material such as Fautrier or Soutine ”, according to art critic Juan Bufill. Those of Ivan Franco are inspired by mythology as the creator of icons which are the product of a collective imagination. With both, you have to stop, take time to really look at the work. The feeling is close: power and sobriety, elegance, mystery. The image is timeless and equivocal, time is suspended.
