Léo Cilas

France • 1991

Between geometry, perception and architecture, Léo Cilas constructs visual spaces in tension.

Biography

Léo Cilas is a contemporary French artist based in Montpellier. For more than a decade, he has been developing a pictorial research around geometry, color and the perception of space.

Through compositions of unstable equilibrium, he explores questions of perception, the shifting of planes, and the construction of space. Lines intersect, volumes seem to slide or become misaligned, creating fluid visual spaces where the eye deliberately loses its bearings. His work plays on the tensions between surface and depth, balance and instability, order and fragmentation.

Influenced by architecture, urban planning, and certain organic forms, Léo Cilas composes hybrid geometric structures where constructive rigor and a sense of movement coexist. His works question our perception of volume and space through plays of superimposition, false reliefs, and chromatic tensions.

Developing both a studio practice and site-specific interventions, he extends his work to different media and contexts: canvas, metal, muralism, installation, and anamorphosis. His approach considers the surface as an active space, capable of transforming the relationship between the artwork, the architecture, and the viewer.
