Biography
Jean Faucheur is a French contemporary artist born in 1956 in Paris, recognized as one of the pioneers of urban art and artistic display in France. Since the early 1980s, he has developed a singular practice that invests public space through monumental posters, collages, in situ interventions, and installations, blurring the boundaries between art, the city, and daily life. His work questions the place of the image in urban space, the memory of places, and the dialogue between the work and its environment.
A graduate of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris (ENSAD), Jean Faucheur began exhibiting at the turn of the 1980s. In 1983, he founded the collective Les Frères Ripoulin with other artists, a major figure in the Parisian art scene, whose posters pasted on the streets renewed the practices of urban art. This experience has permanently marked his approach to creation, based on the appropriation of public space and direct interaction with passers-by.
Starting in the 1990s, he pursued a personal body of work centered on portraiture, photography, painting, and collage. His famous Têtes de l'Art and his very large format posters, often made from photographs, transform city facades into supports for artistic expression. The natural alterations of the posters – tears, weathering, superimpositions – become an integral part of the work, revealing the passage of time and the evolution of the material.
Jean Faucheur participates in numerous exhibitions in France and internationally. His works have been shown notably at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Fondation EDF, the Musée en Herbe, as well as in many galleries and festivals dedicated to contemporary art and street art. He also takes part in artistic projects in public space in Europe, Asia, and North America, contributing to the influence of the French urban art scene.
Considered one of the precursors of contemporary artistic display, Jean Faucheur continues a research where photography, painting, collage, installation, and public art meet. His work, both poetic and engaged, occupies an essential place in the history of contemporary urban art and continues to influence many generations of artists.
