Presentation

In recent years, Markus Åkesson has given birth to a collection of enigmatic works in which stories are silently unfolding that defy any normative logic. In his figurative paintings with a heavy and poetic atmosphere, the characters seem involved in dissonant scenarios in suspended time. Indifferent to the tumult of the world, they offer their meditative solitude to the gaze, seeming to be the only ones able to thwart the metaphysical drama that is forming in them and around them. (...) A master of the double game, Åkesson alters and transforms the viewer's perception of reality, making the latter the witness-voyeur of scenes that are sometimes familiar, sometimes truly phantasmal. The mysterious character of his images is due on the one hand to their particular composition and lighting, borrowed from the world of cinema, and on the other hand to their emotional charge, which conveys a strong feeling of disturbing strangeness.
