Biography

ROBERT CHARLES GRUPPE (1944 - ): Robert Charles Gruppe is an American contemporary Impressionist painter known for his plein-air landscapes and harbor scenes inspired by his native Gloucester, Massachusetts. Born in 1944, he is the son of renowned painter Emile A. Gruppe and the grandson of artist Charles Paul Gruppe, continuing a distinguished family tradition of landscape painting. Gruppe studied painting for twenty years under his father’s guidance and received training at the Gloucester School of Art. He also studied drawing with sculptor George Demetrios, further developing his understanding of form and composition. His paintings seek to capture the light, movement, atmosphere, and emotional character of the landscapes he observes. Working outdoors, he draws inspiration from Gloucester’s coastline, harbors, and surrounding scenery, interpreting these familiar subjects through his own evolving artistic vision. Gruppe continually explores the physical and expressive qualities of painting, experimenting with design, composition, and technique on smaller canvases before translating those discoveries into larger works. His paintings reflect a continuing commitment to Impressionism and to conveying the changing moods and natural beauty of the New England landscape.
