Sarah Hinckley

United States Born in: 1954
Sarah Hinckley is an American abstract artist, born in 1954. She currently lives and works in New York.

Her paintings explore the limits of plastic compositions and the vocabulary of shapes.
Sarah Hinckley earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Tufts and she got a Masters degree of Fine Arts from the University of Columbia. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston as well.

Hinckley describes herself as an intuitive painter, she normally has some ideas in her head before she starts painting but she never has a defined idea, the final product is always unpredictable.

Her works are defined by 3, 4 (or more) colored stripes where the use of the brush, the stratification of the color and organic shapes are highly visible. She sometimes use tape to obtain a more precise outline of the stripes, but she still allows the brush and other pictorial elements to remain free.

Sarah Hinckley normally works either with oil paint or watercolor, taking a long time to meditate on her compositions, she does it while her paintings are drying. This is why most of her pieces take several months to get done.

As a young artist, inspired by the work of Agnes Martin and Rothko, she creates simple, flat colored fields. Where the colors disengaged later on, to become simple bands, while the coats of paint immerse the framework.

She gets inspired by music as well, she likes to listen to it while working and chooses the titles of her paintings according to the lyrics of rock and pop music.
