Presentation

Helina Metaferia was born in Washington D.C, and lives in New York. An interdisciplinary artist, she works in performance, video, installation, collage and social engagement. She tells neglected stories that center black bodies in positions of power and vulnerability.

Evoking different notions of identity and citizenship, her work is inspired by written and oral archives, dialogic art and somatic practices. Helina Metaferia interrogates complex stories of institutionalized and systemic oppression.

Metaferia's work has been supported by several residencies, including MacDowell, Yaddo, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art and MASS MoCA.

Her work has been exhibited (solo exhibitions) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA (2022), The Gallatin Galleries at New York University, New York, NY (2021) and the African Diaspora Museum, San Francisco, California (2017). He has also been exhibited at the Sharjah Biennial in the United Arab Emirates (2023), the Tennessee Triennial through the Frist Art Museum and the Fisk University Art Gallery (2023).

Helina Metaferia is in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the RISD Museum of Art, Providence, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York.
