Helmut Newton: Nudes

Helmut Newton was a German-Australian photographer, known for his fashion photography, but made most famous by his racy black and white nudes. The artist's images graced the pages of magazines, such as French Vogue, Elle and Harper's Bazaar, trailblazing the aesthetic of “porno-chic" within mainstream artistic media.

Newton's photography is erotically-charged and brimming with fetishistic subtexts, with the artist once saying “if a photographer says he is not a voyeur, he is an idiot." Characterized as subversive and obsessive, the artist's work is loaded with sado-masochism, violence and bondage. During the 1970s, this type of provocative photography took precedence over his work in the fashion world with his publication of portfolios such as White Women (1976), Big Nudes (1981) and World Without Men (1984). He also published his Dressed and Naked portfolio in 1981 and Domestic Nudes, marking the pinnacle of his erotic-urban style as well as demonstrating his technical prowess.

Furthermore, Newton shot some of the most recognizable faces in the fashion world, such as that of Kate Moss, Monica Bellucci, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and Catherine Deneuve. His photography is also extremely sought after, with his photograph of Charlotte Rampling selling for ove $440,000 at Christie's in 2017.
