In WHYRE's paintings, there is a question that graffiti has always posed without ever explicitly stating it: what deserves to remain? Born in 1987 and trained in Switzerland at the most demanding school of lettering—wildstyle, a calligraphy where the lines become increasingly complex, a code reserved for initiates—the artist has made the journey from wall to canvas without sacrificing any of his original energy. What he brings back is not nostalgia for the street, but a grammar: the letter as architecture, transparency as depth, the gesture as the signature of a presence.
Gold Rush condenses this grammar into a one-meter square format, frontal and at eye level. An anonymous face occupies the surface—not a portrait in the classical sense, but a figure chosen for its significance, one of those faces that WHYRE describes as "representative of a struggle, of a movement." Anonymity is a deliberate choice here: by refusing to name the face, the artist allows it to become the receptacle of a collective narrative rather than the effigy of an individual. It is urban memory that is inscribed there, the memory of a culture—Hip Hop.
The lettering runs across the face, not over it. WHYRE works with his pseudonym in a transparent way: the letters don't cover the image, they pass through it, intertwine with it, creating the layered thickness that is the recognizable hallmark of his work. From this encounter arises the tension that the artist embraces: between realism and the raw material of graffiti, between control and accident, between what is held and what is released.
The title itself is unconventional. Gold Rush evokes covetousness, value, and the collective desire fixated on an object. Yet the work is not rendered in the expected gold: it is constructed through a dialogue of sky blue and red, a cold against a warm. This incongruity is not accidental. It shifts the question of wealth to its true subject: what is the value of a face in an era that transforms identities into values? What WHYRE sets in a rush is not the metal, but the gaze.
This is what makes Gold Rush transcend mere stylistic exercise. The work belongs to a lineage established by recent history—that of figurative post-graffiti, where street artists have established urban portraiture as a genre in its own right. WHYRE adds his own signature to this: transparency as a concept, not an effect. A unique piece, signed and accompanied by its certificate of authenticity, it speaks to the collector who seeks, in contemporary urban art, something more than mere decoration: a statement.
This work is part of a collection of three pieces (Tokyo Flow, Street Blend, and Gold Rush) presented in 2025 at the group exhibition "Graffiti: Letters and Styles," which brought together a handful of international artists in Switzerland. The aim of this exhibition was to present, in a non-exhaustive way, what graffiti had become in 2025 in its plurality, its essence, and its varied forms. Depending on whether one is knowledgeable or not, a variety of questions arise from these works: "Is this still graffiti?" "Does this style truly belong in a gallery?"... an invitation to better understand this movement that has made the stylization of letters a distinct artistic expression.

Lettering quickly became a testing ground for WHYRE, allowing him to perfect his compositions to which he always tries to give a new dynamism and complexity derived from “wildstyle".
As he evolved in Graffiti, he enriched his art by integrating immersive settings and realistic characters, nourishing his inspiration through the cultural and artistic diversity he encountered.
He succeeds in giving a specific depth and movement to his works thanks to his work of interlacing transparent elements.
