In 1944, while still a student, Pierre Descargues began as a journalist at Art, Georges Wildenstein's newspaper.

In 1945, he was president of the Salon de la Jeune Peinture. In November 19482, with Denys Chevalier, he founded the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture and directed the Collection Artistes de ce temps where he notably published the first works on Vieira da Silva and Bernard Buffet.

In 1950, he married the journalist Catherine Valogne

In 1952, Louis Aragon entrusted him with the direction of the art pages of French Letters. From 1954, he directed the Parisian and literary pages of the Swiss newspaper La Tribune de Lausanne and contributed to La Feuille d'avis de Lausanne.

On France Culture, for 25 years, he was the voice of the arts.

Pierre Descargues has published many articles and books on ancient art: Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Goya, The Hermitage Museum... and on the art of his time: Alechinsky, Braque, Picasso, Fernand Léger, Hans Hartung, Julio Gonzalez, Pol Bury, Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Niki de Saint Phalle, Georges Rapaire, among others. Most of his works have been translated into several languages, L'Art est vivant has been translated into Chinese.

From 1947, he photographed many artists he interviewed: from Fernand Léger to Niki de Saint-Phalle. Her photos have been the subject of several exhibitions in Paris, Geneva, Tokyo, Sydney... and were published in 1998, with those of Catherine Valogne, in Seen, seen, seen: the 1960s, figures of freedom by Éditions Cercle d 'art.
